Conversion of existing Grade II Listed Barn featuring Velux Roof windows.
Velux roof windows open up living space and bring natural light to the conversion of this Grade II Listed Barn.

Imported Spanish Blue-Black Grade A slates, an alternative to traditional slate, were chosen for this project. These offer a cost effective option whilst adhering to Listed Building Regulations within a Conservation Area. Matching Blue-Black Clay Ridges were used to complement the slates and add a cohesive look.

The slates were laid on a high quality breathable membrane instead of traditional felt. This tough, hard-wearing man-made material is an energy-efficient green alternative to traditional roofing felt, and reduces condensation and the amount of ventilation required in the roof space.

The installation of Conservation Velux windows opened up the loft space for use as living accommodation. These are developed in accordance with traditional multi-pane windows and are designed to fit in with existing traditional windows in the surrounding area.

Copper fixings were used. These traditional fixtures are non-ferrous, long lasting and reduce the risk of nail sickness, increasing the life of the roof.

Extensive lead flashing was required and fashioned around the Velux windows, vents and abutments.

A key part of the project was to channel all interior house extraction through the roof space. A chimney flu was fitted to accommodate planning consent which barred the use of traditional chimney methods, as well as a soil vent for a new bathroom. In addition, extraction vents were fitted for ventilation fans in both kitchen and bathroom.
